Poetry is a unique type of text that provokes many different responses from people.  Some love it.  Some hate it.  Some simply think it’s a waste of time.  No matter what, poetry still prevails in our modern world (even though, as Lisette and Mark rightly point out, it is perhaps not as popular, or as regularly accessed, as it once was). Define what poetry is to you.

  2. Notes from class: what is poetry?

Poetry is literature that lets the writter express his/her emotions through a piece of writting. There are man types of poems and ones that can range from childrens rhyme to poems direted at adults with a deeper underlying meaning. Within poetry there are many devices used to display the emotions and feeling the writer is trying to get through. Devices such as personification, metaphor, simile, rhyme and repetition are used along with many, many others.

  3. Poetry is a text that expresses a person’s emotions or expresses a particular message. Literary devices are used excessively in poems which can sometimes initiate conflicts over what the specific line or what the poem is about. These devices are used to give meaning and to evoke a particular emotion in the reader that was experienced by the poet. Poetry can be confusing at times with the multiple meanings that a singular poem can exhibit. However, poetry is a genre of literature that is very much enjoyed and hard to write.

  4. Poetry is the art of having nothing to say, but saying it beautifuly and eloquently. Poetry usually acts to depict or describe something, whether it be a physical or abstract entity. A poet articulates his/her opinions/ideas/emotions etc. through words. Leunig argues that there is not a single thing left in this world which has not been “descried to death by some bloody poet”.

  5. Poetry is incredible. However, in the school-based environment, it cannot be fully appreciated. So much time is spent, on what i consider to be awful poems. Deconstruction of said poems to the extent of frustration, does not shed a positive light on what can be a delightful genre. Furthermore, through the genre deemed as “popular music”, the poetic essence of songwriting is gradually deteriorating. Artists are concentrating mainly on the music, with lyrics as an extra faeuture. Even Hip-Hop and rap, which in the past has been considered by those learned in the genre, as one of the most poetic music styles, is losing its depth.

  6. Poetry is a sophisticated aspect of literature which allows people to develop a better understanding of different values, attitudes and beliefs. Whether a poem concerns culture, history or love, each poem has an undertone. Poetic devices including metaphors, similes, repetition and alliteration are used to connote an important meaning and evoke a strong emotion of a poem.

  7. Poetry is a genre of writing that allows its creator to express their ideas and feelings in an unique way. Poets lace their writing with many different devices, for example, simile, metaphor and imagery. Each line can link to the next, telling the writer’s story or a line can stand alone and draw the reader in with only a few words. Poetry is something that the reader can lose them self in, until one can’t distinguish fantasy from reality.

  8. Poetry is a method of writing that can be used to express one’s emotions or to project a message toward those whom read it. Poets have used various different devices in order to give their work more depth and also to enhance a particular emotion or to invoke a particular emotional response.

  9. Poetry is a single cloud in an endless azure sky. Poetry is the voice of a mountain stream which whispers through silence. Poetry is a sharp fragrance through smokey mist. Poetry is the first blade of grass to acknowledge the morning.

We have not but words to express Poetry.

  10. Poetry is a commonly misunderstood literary genre that extensively uses poetic devices in order to convey core themes and values. Generally, poetry is sectioned into stanzas, and specific sentence and stanza lengths are chosen carefully by poets, often to achieve a particular effect. Poetry, more so than other genres appeals to the human sense; touch, taste, smell and sight, allowing readers to bring their own experiences and understand the poem more intimately.

  11. I believe that once, poetry was a very popular and celebrated art form within society, however with the development and evolution of civilisation, it is not often enjoyed by the younger generations of the modern times. I do believe poetry can be very beautiful and very clever; however I also believe that many people there are more interesting forms of entertainment these days, so that poetry has more or less been phased out. I also find it very interesting that many of history’s great poets died without having success in their lifetime, however in the years and decades following their death, they gained increasing popularity and are now considered some of the best poets to have walked the earth. An example of this is Keats, who died at the age of 26, thinking himself a failure. He is now considered to be the greatest male romantic poets of all time. It could be said that knowing his life story and what he experienced makes his poems gain another element of emotion and raw beauty.

  12. Jillease’s Response

What defines poetry is debatable. To me, poetry is any piece of writing that was intended to be meaningful. For this reason, poetry is a creative outlet and can be used to express feelings, emotions, stories and certain subjects in an abstract way similar to art and music composition. Poetic devices such as simile, metaphor, onomatapoeia, rhyme and personification can be used to develop and emphasise certain ideals and values that the writer wishes to bring to the reader’s attention.

  13. Poetry is a unique form of writing, often composed to express one’s feelings, or create a particular mood or idea. Numerous literary devices are utilised within poetry, employed by the writer to produce the certain theme they aim to create. Such devices as personification, metaphors, similes, rhythm, rhyme and numerous more are beneficial in enhancing the poem’s connotative meanining….

  14. Raw notes form class ba:

Poetry is a form of writing used by authors to deliver a message to an audiecne. This message can be of anyting love, war, racisim even just hating (ie Diss tracks)

The author can instill an artfull arrangment of the poetic devices to deliver their message in an entertaining form.

  15. Poetry is a genre that to many is a complicated jumble of similes, metaphors, personification and onomatopoeia, that over complicate the simple meaning of what the poet is trying to communicate. This usually means that poems are avoided by many people and their meanings are otherwise untold or overlooked by the broader community. Even modern day music artists avoid using poetry which used to be a commonly used component in lyric composition as consumer audiences are unable to interpret the lyrics and understand the deeper meaning. To those who analyse poetry much more deeply, and apply the time and effort, poetry can open up a new world of ideals, themes and values presented by authors, musicians and poets.

  16. Poetry is a type of literary piece that can be described as a door way to one’s imagination and inner beliefs and values. At times it can be difficult to interpret certain poems but with enough time to uncover its true meaning and purpose, many gems can be revealed. Therefore, each gem is planted to reflect and bring to light a certain issue. Writers of poetry use a number of clever literary devices to construct a powerful and insightful piece. Thus, the use of metaphors, similes, personification and onomatopoeia are only some of the devices off an unlimited list which can intelligently helps the reader form vivid images in their mind.

  17. Poetry is a form of writing that uses poetic devices to describe instances and create rhythm. Poem’s can be written about absolutely anything and thus allows for different interpretations by different people. Poetry can be in the form of a song that expresses a person’s attitudes, values and beliefs. A poem has an incredible amount of underlying meaning that cannot be found unless attention is bought to detail. A poem does not have to rhyme although rhyme is a poetic device along with many, many others.

  18. Much like an art, poetry can often be ambigious and subjective – it can be read in more than one way. People often construe poetry to be verbose and meaningless, yet this is far from the truth. In fact, the complex nature of this genre can only be fully appreciated by an open mind. There is no limit to what can be achieved in poetry.
